When we speak about “voice off” in cinema, we talk about a voice that comes from out of the scene. In contemporary society, there are similarly many voices that are border line. We chose to name our organization VOICE OFF with these marginalized individuals in mind, in the hopes of giving them the chance to express themselves through cinema.
Founded in Modena, Italy, in 2009, the goal of VOICE OFF is to provide real opportunities of expression and integration to the people subject to social exclusion, marginalization, discrimination and exploitation. VOICE OFF therefore tries to understand the real causes of their difficulties and empower them. Its mission is to showcase films written and directed by groups of citizens and communities who use video as a creative and participatory tool for breaking social, geographical and cultural isolation, and countering media stereotypes.
VOICE OFF produces and distributes documentaries and what we call “participatory video”. Our focus is the production and distribution of a special genre of documentary that is particularly suitable for the new multiplatform world: documentaries that draw attention to human rights, social justice and environmental protection.
VOICE OFF runs participatory video workshops in marginalised areas of the city of Modena. Participatory video is a tool for individuals and groups to grow in self-confidence and trust, and to build skills to act for change. Control stays with the participants from project conception through to implementation and thereafter. Authorship of a group of participants means control over content and freedom of expression.
The aim is to collect unheard stories and meet unknown talents from beyond the wall of the digital divide. We want to share experiences between the professional and the community concerned, another example of changing roles in audiovisual production and a process where the making of the film is as important as the film itself. We also produce documentaries that draw attention to injustices and campaign, in a small way, to make the world a better place. Check out our website to follow our projects!
